    Killer Toon / Killer Week

Whew, quite a week and the updates (featuring game design additions by myself and Christian) to Killer Toon are finally out in the wild. It’s worth having a go at Killer Toon and seeing what you like and dislike about the game design. LINK

The interactive experience is centered on customizing your toon and collecting the best weapons and armor you can afford. The other experience is purely an entertainment, non-interactive variety of combat that your toon will engage in with the toons of your friends and others.

This form of combat resolution/experience level is not unusual or necessarily unpopular in the gaming world…after all tower defense games are heavily oriented around similar experience patterns, strategizing then watching and finally repeat. However, design wise I think that killer toon may suffer from a bit of a target demographic identity crisis…as well as a crisis of entertainment value when it come to the fights.

Those concerns/critiques aside the game has a definite appeal to it that I would guess lies in the innate interest people have with interacting with there friends, and Killer Toon is a silly, casual, and humorous way to do just that!

my first week of work is going well and I have been able to work on implementing some ideas I have suggested for Killer Toon, as well as some created by Christian the studio manager.

i am pleasantly surprised at my ability to impact the design of the game and so far am really happy working with Christian and the rest of the guys! An update of the game is due out next week so I will write a more detailed and proper post about my contributions when it goes live, as well as add the game to my ludography as a game I contributed to significantly!

first day of work is over, glad to be working with a good group of guys and as a member of a team, it makes a huge difference!

I have some fun/challenging projects to work on for Killer Toon so that will keep me busy…I have to manage to stay up on on my studies in Allen’s prototyping course as well cause they are so valuable to me as a designer.

    Site Redesign!

So times are changing (for the better!), so I figured I would redesign my site and start pulling together a really design blog and portfolio of my work. This theme is called P2 and I have to give a BIG thank you to Marc Yu for designing the website header, it looks awesome!

Marc is also a great guy (besides artist) that I met at GDC ‘09 and you can see his own website by clicking HERE

    big week

I have a big week coming up, starting work and I need 4 solid game design concepts for prototyping class next Wednesday…The scope of these concepts has to be pretty large, involving multiple mechanics and meaningful incorporation of spacial design and interaction.

Allen talked about utilizing space as a way to to bring out the character of a game experience, which is an interesting thought and something I will focus on.

I have always day dreamed about an exploration/journey type game, I suppose it would be an RPG but with more emphasis on environmental challenges (survival of elements, exploitation of resources) and teamwork. A multiplayer team based game that pits the travelling players against a hostile but beautiful world…I would play that.

    Going to Work!

So I just signed my offer letter from Toy Studio today! I will be going to work starting next Monday as a Game Designer/Developer (Flash/AS3 dev) and am very excited to start working on some awesome “toys” for Facebook!

This is a big moment for me as it is my first “real” job, not counting the nearly two years of independent work and school that went into getting my first job in the industry. Toy Studio is a cool place and the social game space is a really exciting section of the industry right now, so this is gonna be a great experience.

This is going to be a transition for me, but a great one, and it is an awesome beginning!

On this awesome note take a look at this article reviewing Toy Studio’s first game “Killer Toon”

Nice! Came up with something that creates a deception experience by making the point of the game to collect certain types of points based on a your character cards requirements, but the game penalizes you for being too obvious about what you want to collect!

We’ll see how it goes in class tonight, maybe I will publish the rules and materials as a mousehog game on this site if it’s fun!

the game had some design issues that need improvement, but overall I think it was a good start…I am going to make some adjustments and publish it soon.

    cloak & dagger card game

Working on a card game based on the deception mechanic and experience in the Assassin’s Creed series…how to express all that cloak and dagger with cards and players, that is the question.
